E-metrics

Vendor provided data for e-resources is not always reliable or available.  And they can be difficult to collect and analyze.  So vendor provided data is useful, and a good place to start, but more is needed.  Project COUNTER is one initiative, formed in 2003 by publishers and librarians to establish standards for electronic resource usage measurement.  To cellect better data, e-metrics was developed.

E-metrics are a way to collect library performance measure for e-products.  You can measure:

  • website visits (the number of times a webpage is accessed)
  • activity and use of the network (number of keyword searches, number of uniquely identifed visitors, number of documents downloaded)
  • turnaways (this lets Systems know if we need more ports or a larger server space)

E-metrics helps libraries justifify the rising cost of e-resources.  It allows libraries to prevent duplication, study print vs. online usage, and evaluate the true cost of e-resource subscriptions and bundles.

Cataloging Blogs

The topic that I was assigned to blog about is “Cataloging Blogs”. A search of the Web produced several blogs devoted to cataloging so I selected the following 7 to include here.

http://catalogablog.blogspot.com/  - This blog focuses on a variety of cataloging issues including metadata, classification, and subject access. It also contains links to various library-related blogs, conferences, and cataloging resources.

http://www.frbr.org/ – This blog is devoted to developments regarding FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records).

http://futurelib.pbwiki.com/ – This is actually a wiki about the future of catalogs and data formats. You are allowed to edit the wiki once you obtain the password from the author or guess it from the clues given on the site.

http://www.catalogingfutures.com/ – This blog is devoted to the future of cataloging as well as metadata in libraries.

http://blogs.ala.org/digiblog.php – This blog was developed as a supplement to the 2007 ALCTS (Association for Library Collections & Technical Services) Midwinter Symposium in Seattle. However, it is now being used to facilitate discussions about the future of library collections, technical services, and user services.

http://laureltarulli.wordpress.com/ – This blog is called “The Cataloging Librarian”. It covers a variety of cataloging topics including authority work, access issues, the profession overall, and subject headings. It also contains links to a variety of cataloging Web sites.

http://cataloger20.blogspot.com/ – This blog focuses on cataloging issues as well as Web 2.0 technologies and their relevance to libraries.

LISNews and Librarian in Black

LIS News and Librarian in Black are 2 library blogs I recommend. LISNews is a blog devoted to current events and news in the world of libraries. On this site, you will find “links to news stories and Web sites, along with original writing, interviews and reviews.” One of the features I like best is their current topics categories. They have categories just for acquisitions and cataloging, as well as money issues, patriot’s act, cartoons, and movie news (just to name a few). Check it out at http://www.lisnews.com/Librarian in Black is a good resource for technical services staff. The author of this blog writes “I hope this site can serve as a one-stop-shop for all us Techie Librarians…web design, technology news, library world news, reference stuff, funky gadgets, and other useful (or simply amusing) sites and posts.” http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/
