SEFLIN annual meeting November 18, 2008

This annual SEFLIN meeting is primarily for discussion groups. We met in the art gallery for coffee and danish. Each group had a table assigned to it, Cheryl sat with the Serials group, I sat with the Catalogers.  Jeannette Smithee spoke knowledgeably about and described the many features of www.seflin.org . She emphasized that we should take advantage of the many links, sources of information within each page, etc. to support the communication within our group as well as for cross-referencing to others who have registered on the SEFLIN site. Catalogers have planned a February meeting. Our chair, Marietta de Winter, will use DOODLE to poll the group about a date and time.  ***

SEFLIN Workshop Looks at Techno-stress

The SEFLIN webinar “Reversing the Ratchet: Basic Technology Adoption Strategies for Library Workers” was an interesting look at the right and wrong ways to implement technological innovations in the library. It was a nice complement to our TLC 2.0 project last year, and I wish all the participants in that initiative—including its planners—had seen this presentation in advance.

Presented in a lively interview format, the program mostly featured the thoughts of Steven Bell, a Temple University librarian and tech watcher. The program was sympathetic to the plight of us library workers as we are constantly asked to adopt new technologies that only seem to add more work and stress to our lives. Bell said that that discomfort stems largely from the failure of libraries to (1) clearly identify a problem or need before introducing a technology to address it and (2) clearly explain to staff why a new technology is being adopted.

Although Bell allowed that not every “shiny new toy” should be implemented in libraries, he allowed that most should at least be investigated. To this end, he advised libraries to make sure staff has ample time to explore new tools without having to do all their “real” work, too. He cited the example of the company Google, which actually encourages their employees to spend one-fifth of their work week playing—that is, exploring new tools and technologies to see how they could be used in the work setting. Certainly Google is an exception in this, but Bell says it’s a model we should look at.
