April Fool’s Day….Guess who’s Back?

4/01/2008

Andrew’s medical leave has come to an end and TS is happy to have him back. How happy? Well true to the day’s theme, an acquisition emergency just “happens” to occur on his 1st day back. Rushing to save the day, he opens the bindery room for a surprise welcome back lunch!

I’m Back!

Unit Name: Sherman Library / Technical Services

These are the engagement items on which we will focus:                    GOAL CATEGORY:

                                                                                                            Q4.  Recognition

Q12 Learn & grow

Area of Strength: Q12

Area of Opportunity: Q4

This is what we will do to drive increase faculty/staff/administration engagement on this item:

Q4.  Recognition

Everyone in the department will assume responsibility for giving recognition or praise.  We will hang a corkboard on the wall, where we can place thank you/recognition notes.  We will recognize that when Library programs are mentioned in NSU SharkBytes, this recognition would probably not have been possible without our back-room participation.  We will have a “praise party,” where we talk about each other’s accomplishments.   We will all remember to say please and thank you, and that our focus should be on the positive, not the negative.

Q12. Learn & grow

Each staff member will be actively engaged in developing a professional development plan.  Ideas to consider: looking at SEFLIN’s community of learning site for workshops and videos to view, shadowing others in their job, sharing ways to learn via email, suggestion box, be more open to communicating, laughter.  Accomplishments will be recognized on the departmental blog.

This is what success will look like:

Q4.  Recognition

Each member of the department will be a productive and happy team player.  Everyone participates in giving recognition and praise.

Q12. Learn & grow

Each performance appraisal in April 2008 will have a section developed for professional development.  Each staff member will be actively engaged in developing this section of the evaluation, crafted to meet everyone’s individual goals.

This is how we will know we are making a difference:

Q4.  Recognition

We will know we are making a difference when we are able to increase the amount of recognition each of us is offering the other members of the team.

Q12. Learn & grow

We will know we are making a difference when each member of the team is actively engaged in developing a plan to learn and grow.

This is when we will review our progress:

We will add “staff engagement” as an item to each departmental monthly meeting, and evaluate our progress.  We will have a Thanksgiving meal together, and review and celebrate our achievements.

Engagement Commitment Plan

Name: Susi Seiler

Unit Name: Sherman Library / Technical Services

Goal Category: Passion

These are the engagement items on which we will focus:

            Area of strength:

The Library is a natural social gathering space, with strong audiovisual and

                               e-collections.

We are the behind the scenes production crew and we can make things

                                happen!

            Area of opportunity:

We will take a leadership role in transitioning materials into e-format and maintaining a strong audiovisual collection.  By acquiring, cataloging, and assisting to promote our audiovisual collection and e-resources and foreign language material, we will assist students to feel like NSU is a perfect place for them.  Because whether they are local or distance students, we have great items for them!

This is what we will do to drive increased student engagement on this item:

We will enhance our skills to acquire and catalog audiovisual and e-resources, and create the most efficient and effective workflow. We will be vigilant about performing database maintenance, and fix broken links, in order to make students happy that they can access information without problems.

We will assist other departments to promote our audiovisual and e-resource collections.  We will meet with PLS, Reference, Archives, Collection Development, Marketing, and Library Development staff to see if they are in need of reports which we could create routinely for them. We will identify and distribute reports on audiovisual materials, e-books, and e-journals to subject librarians.

This is what success will look like:

Audiovisual material and e-resources will be acquired and cataloged quickly and efficiently.  Millennium will provide accurate information. We will incorporate e-books into our approval plan by the end of 2008.

With improved promotion of our collections, we expect to see an increase of student use of the library collections.  This will be measured by usage statistics for our audiovisual and purchased e-resources.

This is how we will know we are making a difference:

At least one article will appear in SharkBytes or the Library newsletter highlighting a newly acquired collection or service.

Positive feedback will be received from our colleagues that they (1) are seeing an improvement in the acquisition and cataloging of audiovisual and e-materials, (2) are seeing user satisfaction improve as a result of our database maintenance efforts, and (3) are using the information we are providing to them to promote the collections.

Usage statistics will increase.

This is when we will review our progress:

We will add “student engagement” as an item to each departmental monthly meeting, and evaluate our progress.  We will have a Thanksgiving meal together, and review and celebrate our achievements.
